The college will start offering a Bachelor of Applied Business Administration in Accounting program in the 2012-13 school year, it announced on July 26.

The program will be offered in Rankin Inlet as a continuation of the college's existing two-year management studies diploma. The diploma is degree-transferable but the college still needs to find a degree partner, said Michael Shouldice, the interim president of Nunavut Arctic College. He added the new program will likely accept 15 students.

"Finance is one of the strongest areas where there is a lot of employment in Nunavut," he said. "People who have financial skills will always be in demand."

The Royal Bank of Canada donated $150,000 to the college, money that will be used for developmental costs.

Bruce Mackenzie, RBC's regional president for Alberta and the NWT, said the bank notices the need for finance and accounting professionals in Nunavut.

"In the North right now, in Iqaluit, we do believe there is a need for business help and for accounting because it will help businesses grow and prosper, and they hire people and it helps the community grow," he said.

The college also offers a number of degrees with partner universities, such as nursing or teacher education.
