Renovations coming to town hall
New carpets, paint and cubicles for town employees

INUVIK - Come September, the Town of Inuvik will sport a brand new look.

Renovations to council chambers and town hall offices will take place over two weeks in August to update the look and provide better working conditions for employees. New carpeting, cubicles and office furniture as well as an actual council table upstairs will get replace of a look that's been in the building for at least 20 years.

"We're not doing any structural changes," said Grant Hood, SAO for the town. "Things are starting to fall apart. The town hasn't spent any money for itself in many years."

With the town finishing a $4.5 million paving project, upgrading utilidors and re-doing the building envelope for the Midnight Sun Recreation Complex, Hood said it's time to modernize the offices and provide a better working environment for town staff.

The town plans to spend up to $300,000 in the capital budget to re-do the office. Painting and carpeting will be done by local companies, but to re-design the office space and cubicles they have gone to a company based out of Calgary. It's the only one that responded to their request.

While some may see the re-decoration as a luxury, Hood begs to differ.

"Right now you walk into a building that's dirty and, with worn-out carpet, it's almost a safety hazard," he said. "The furniture will be designed so that if we move into a new building down the road, it will be portable."

They will use the same manufacturer for the new office furniture as is currently used, which Hood said has a history of quality.

During the renovations, there will be some disruptions to service to residents as the building has to continue operating, but must be vacated during the two weeks it'll take to complete. Residents will likely have to go to the Midnight Sun Recreation Complex to pay utility or tax bills.

"We're still working out the logistics of phones and have to continue providing services," Hood said. "The plan is to have it done in two weeks."

The renovations have been in the capital budget for the past few years.
