Man accused of sexual assault, luring to appear
A 41-year-old Yellowknife man charged with sexual assault, sexual touching and luring a boy under the age of 16 over the Internet is due to appear back in court July 12. The accused made a brief appearance in territorial court last month, when Crown prosecutor Glen Boyd elected to treat all the charges as indictable offences. Judge Garth Malakoe adjourned the case until next Tuesday, when the defence is scheduled to choose a trial by judge alone or judge and jury. The offences are alleged to have occurred on April 15, 2011, in Yellowknife. The accused was released from custody after agreeing to abide by several strict conditions.

Extension to offer industrial lots
City council has unanimously supported the city entering into a contract worth about $1.36 million for the construction of the Enterprise Drive extension.
The extension, to be built by RTL Robinson Enterprises Ltd., will stretch to Curry Drive and create about 30 small industrial lots. The lots will be zoned industrial, and allow for caretakers units - unlike the Engle Business District, which is zoned business industrial and general industrial.

Bus routes trimmed for summer
The City of Yellowknife has announced that beginning this week, Yellowknife Transit is reverting to its Route 3 summer schedule. Route 3 goes from Wal-mart to downtown to Ndilo and back - but with no service to School Draw Avenue, Forrest Drive, Magrum Crescent or Stanton Hospital. The summer schedule service for Route 3 starts at 6:50 a.m. and runs every half hour until 10:10 a.m. It then runs every hour until 2:50 p.m. and resumes half-hour service at 6:50 p.m. As of July 4, routes 1 and 2 and the express transit routes will not be offered.

Heritage committee seeks members
The City of Yellowknife is seeking volunteers to sit on its Heritage Committee. The committee was established in 1985 to help conserve, protect and celebrate the city's heritage for the benefit of current and future residents. It was also formed as a means of advising city council on the designation and restoration of Yellowknife heritage sites. Anyone interested in sitting on the committee can submit an application letter by Friday, July 15.

Busy in Rankin
Rankin Inlet - Kivalliq Counselling and Support Services in Rankin Inlet is scheduled to host a pair of activities during the next few weeks.
A day-long iqaluliriniq (fish camp) is slated to be held on July 14, weather permitting. The camp will run from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the Dianne River. Ten applicants, aged 18 and older, were selected to take part in the camp.
The group will learn to make pipsi, fish bags, chowder and fish bone art during the day at the river. Support Services will also be holding a series of Youth Spirit Days in the hamlet. The event will feature a number of fun-filled activities at the Singiittuq Complex Community Hall on July 8, 15 and 22.
Trouble in Coral
Coral Harbour - A 43 year old man from Coral Harbour had to be medevaced to Winnipeg for the treatment of injuries he received during a vicious assault in Coral Harbour this past week.
The victim was listed in stable condition as of press time.
A 17-year-old young offender from Coral was arrested in connection to the assault, and is scheduled to appear in court on pending charges of assault causing bodily harm this coming November. The RCMP's V Division major crime unit, police dog service unit and forensic identification section were flown into Coral to assist the local detachment of the RCMP with the investigation.
Suicide strikes
Arviat - The community of Arviat was saddened by the sudden death of another youth in the community this past month.
The youth was a 2010 graduate of John Arnalukjuak High School. The school year in Arviat started and ended with a suicide in the community.
Prospecting course
Arviat - The Hamlet of Rankin Inlet will host a prospecting course from Monday, July 11, until Saturday, July 16, at the Rankin Inlet Trades Centre. The course will run from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. from Monday to Friday, and from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday,

Nunavut Day
Kivalliq - Communities across the Kivalliq region will be hosting a number of special events and fun-filled activities for the entire family in celebration of Nunavut Day on Friday, July 9. Residents are asked to contact their local hamlet office for a complete list of scheduled events.
Workshop scheduled
Rankin Inlet - The Hamlet of Rankin Inlet will host an entrepreneurship training workshop at the hamlet council chambers from July 19
to 22, running from 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
The youth in the workshop program will cover self
assessment of skills, interest, strengths and weakness, brainstorm business ideas, look at products: services and customer bases: examine networking with potential supporters, funders, consultants and mentors; look at how to register a business; the different forms of business organization; facility and staff management; how to write a business plan and finance a business.
Participants must have a high school diploma, an interest in working in business and good computer skills.
Those interested in attending the workshop are asked to contact Lori Tagoona or Ashley Burton at the hamlet office.
