Hay River man sentenced for trafficking Paul Bickford Northern News Services Published Monday, July 25, 2011
A 30-year-old man was sentenced to a three-month conditional sentence and 45 hours of community service when he appeared in Hay River Territorial Court on July 20. In an agreed statement of facts, Crown attorney Carole Sheppard explained the charge arose from an incident on Feb. 2 as the RCMP's G Division Drug Section was conducting an undercover operation in Hay River. At about 10:30 p.m. on that date, two undercover officers went to a Hay River bar and spoke to the man "One of the undercover officers asked if there was any weed around to which (the man) replied, 'Wait a second. I will hook you up,'" Sheppard said. He told the officer the price would be $20 for a gram. One of the officers handed him a 20-dollar bill, which he in turn gave to an unknown man in exchange for a small package wrapped in tinfoil and he passed it along to the undercover officer. He was charged on March 23. The Crown recommended a three-month conditional sentence and the 45 hours of community service in light of a very positive pre-sentence report According to his attorney, the man is a first-time offender originally from the Maritimes and feels stupid because of the charge and is facing the wrath of his family. He apologized to the court and said he has learned a lesson from the experience. "I'll never do it again," he promised. The terms of the conditional sentence include keeping the peace and being of good behaviour, appearing before the court when ordered to do so, and reporting to a supervisor as directed.
