Hotel lobby cash machine disappears Tim Edwards Northern News Services Published Friday, July 15, 2011
The ATM was owned by Alanco Holdings Ltd. and set up in the lobby of Nova Court, a hotel and apartment building next to Stanton Territorial Hospital. It has since been replaced. The value of the missing machine or the amount of money inside was unknown at press time. The police are asking for the public's help in locating the person or persons involved in the theft. It happened between 2:55 and 3:10 a.m. and the specifics of how it happened are unknown. RCMP Const. Kathy Law said, "I've never seen that before in Yellowknife." She said the police are unsure of how many people were involved, but she suspects more than one person was responsible. "They're fairly heavy from what I understand," Law said of the cash machine. She said, to her knowledge, the clerk was away from the area at the time the theft occurred and the police do not believe there is any connection to the clerk being distracted by other matters during the theft. When contacted by Yellowknifer, Alanco personnel did not want to comment on the specifics of the ATM. Alanco offers machines of the Triton and Tranax brands. The ATM Depot website sells many brands of ATMs, including Triton and Tranax, and states the ATMs it carries weigh between 54.4 and 113.4 kg, though it is unclear whether the website carries the same models as Alanco. A supervisor at Nova Court, Marilyn Canning, said the hotel does have video surveillance but did not want to comment on whether footage of the theft was captured due to the ongoing police investigation. Canning also did not want to comment further on the situation without permission from hotel management.
