New wheels for a good cause Darrell Greer Northern News Services Published Wednesday, July 13, 2011
The fundraiser is the only one of its kind held in the Kivalliq, with all proceeds going towards the repair and purchase of equipment and supplies for Rankin's fire department and ambulance service.
This year's raffle netted more than $14,000 for the department.
Karlik said the fire department greatly appreciates the support it received from the community in making the raffle such a success.
He said the firefighters and ambulance crew look forward to hosting similar events in the future.
"The money raised goes back to the community, either through the fire department or our ambulance service," said Karlik.
"It helps us serve our community better and helps keep our firefighters safe and well-equipped when on a call.
"The fire department would like to thank Canadian North, Kivalliq Air, M&T, Umingmak Building Supply, Sakku Drugs, Robert Janes, the Kivalliq Inuit Association, Northern store, Coop and Atuqtuarvik Corp. for their donations.
"We were happy and surprised for the winners' draw when Jordin Tootoo added an extra prize by donating $250 he won on Canada Day."
There were 10 prizes in the raffle, with two grand prizes of a Honda all-terrain vehicle (ATV).
Elder Timothy Akerolik and Griffin Kaludjak were the lucky ATV winners.
Akerolik said this was the first time he ever won anything in a raffle draw.
He said he didn't own an ATV before the raffle, and is very happy to have the new machine.
"I'm going to use the machine to do a lot more hunting and fishing," said Akerolik.
"I'm really looking forward to going out on the land with my grandson, using two machines.
"My grandson, like me, is a big Maple Leafs fan and I'm sure we'll be putting some Toronto stickers on my new machine.
"The machine rides smoothly, but, being all white, I'm little worried about somebody mistaking it for a wolf out on the land."
