'Ball' game on in Rankin Darrell Greer Northern News Services Published Wednesday, July 13, 2011
The community event featured an invitational game between Team Jordin Tootoo and Team Rankin Recreation. The Tootoo squad claimed victory over the recreation players, but not many of the hockey lovers who gathered for the spectacle cared about the final score. The game was all about having fun, launching a new facility for the community, and spending quality time together watching Rankin's very own NHLer, even if he was running down a concrete slab instead of blazing across a sheet of ice. A number of prizes were also drawn during the gathering, and hotdogs and refreshments were provided for the large crowd on hand. Hamish Tatty of the hamlet council's recreation committee said he was pleasantly surprised when asked to participate. He said it was the first real game of hockey he'd played in about 10 years. "I was surprised to see such a great turnout for the game, and it was really a lot of fun playing out there with those guys," said Tatty. "It was amazing to see so many people come out for the game and having so much fun. "It was something different playing on the outdoor pad and I really enjoyed it." Tatty said, in his opinion, the new ball hockey rink is well-constructed. He said it should last for a number of years if the people of the community take good care of it. "Hopefully, people will respect the new ball rink when they use it because it has a lot of potential in this community. "Taking part in that game has me thinking about playing more because it was so much fun playing with friends and having all those people watching. "Hockey's so popular here, I'm hoping a little league of ball hockey might start from this so I can get more involved."
