RANKIN INLET - A man has been charged with second degree murder following a hit-and-run incident in the community of Rankin Inlet this past weekend.

Idlout Korgak, 32, of Rankin Inlet has been charged with second-degree-murder and failure to remain at the scene.

The RCMP dispatch centre in Iqaluit received a complaint of a hitandrun incident in Rankin Inlet during the early morning hours of Saturday, July 9.

RCMP in Rankin Inlet attended the scene and discovered the body of Paul Kataluk, originally from Coral Harbour, upon their arrival.

Kataluk died from injuries he sustained when hit by an all-terrain vehicle.

Korgak remains in custody after appearing before a justice of the peace in Rankin Inlet on July 11.

A date has yet to be set for his first appearance before the Nunavut Court of Justice.

Members of the V Division major crimes unit and forensic services were flown to Rankin to assist with the investigation.

RCMP Sgt. Louis Jenvenne said the Rankin detachment received excellent support from both C Division and D Division officers from Iqaluit during the investigation.

He said a number of the out-of-town officers were still in Rankin as of Monday afternoon.

"Obviously, there's a lot of work that still has to be done in connection to this matter," said Jenvenne. "I honestly don't know, at this point in time, if other charges will be brought forward, but I don't think so."
