Yellowknifer wiped out Heather Lange Northern News Services Published Friday, June 3, 2011
On Sunday, May 22, the TVtropolis network aired the eighth episode of Wipeout Canada, a Canadian version of the popular international game show where participants race through a giant obstacle course for a large cash prize. The show was filmed in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Lee was eliminated in the third round of the episode, after making it past the wall of boxing gloves called the "Sucker Punch," bounding across big red balls and staying on her feet during the crazy antics of a mechanical arm called the "Sweeper." After being strapped to a spinning machine called the "Dizzy Dummy," the Yellowknife resident had to make a dash to cross the "Topple Towers." It was then that Lee was dismissed from the competition. Lee said other competitors had a height advantage over her. "Me being really short, the gap between the platforms became like a huge leap. It was a minimum of four to five feet between gaps. The guy who won was much taller," said the five-foot-two Lee. There were also some hidden obstacles that weren't disclosed to the competitors until they were actually on the obstacle course. "The doughnuts we had to jump over were covered in Vaseline. I watch the American version all the time. It looks so easy, but add additional obstacles like the Vaseline without telling you, you can't really prepare for that. I have much more respect for other contestants now," said Lee. When asked how she prepared, Lee responded, "I drank beer and ate pizza." Lee was not hurt competing in the intense obstacle course except for a few minor scrapes. "I noticed, after I settled down, the bumps and bruises. Nerves, adrenaline are on crazy high, you don't notice anything but what is in front of you," said Lee. Scrapes or no scrapes, Lee said she loved every minute of the experience. "Being chosen was like winning. Everyone was a larger than life character and being around 39 people for five days, the energy is incredible," said Lee. Lee beat out more than 44,000 applicants who applied and then, with the help of her friend, Melanie Kornacki, filmed the audition video that featured here wrestling a 150-pound Newfoundland dog in a kiddie pool and jumping off a dock at Long Lake to capture one of the 260 spots available for all episodes of the show. Kornacki watched Lee maneuver through the wall of boxing gloves, jump as far as her little legs would take her through the big red balls, dodge the mechanical arm in the second round and ultimately be taken down by the secretly Vaselined doughnuts in the third round. Kornacki and friends threw a viewing party at Boston Pizza while Lee's family stood by on Skype during the airing of the episode. "She did extremely well, but it would have been nice to see her in the finals. Her disadvantage was her height. It was a difficult round but she was still top of her class," said Kornacki. "It was even more entertaining than expected. No one was was prepared for how funny she was."
