PANNIQTUUQ/PANGNIRTUNG - No charges will be laid in the death of young boy who was attacked by three dogs in Pangnirtung in March 2010.

The four-year-old died after being attacked by the dogs, who had been part

of a team chained on the sea ice.

The dogs had been running loose for several days.

Following an RCMP investigation, the Public Prosecution Services of Canada office could not find enough reason to charge the hamlet bylaw officer with criminal negligence causing death, according to an press release issued by the police.

It found many people including hamlet officials and the dogs' owner were asked to secure their dogs but there was no follow-up.

On the hamlet's website it states: "It is the responsibility of every pet owner to ensure that their animal is not allowed to run loose, any

dog running loose can and will be shot under our animal control bylaw."

The file now gets passed on to the chief coroner's office.

Coroner Padma Suramala is on leave and is set to return to

her office in June so it is not known how long it could be before she decides if an inquest will be required.
