Snowmobile driver damages graveyard

IQALUIT - About 20 crosses at the graveyard in Iqaluit are now damaged thanks to a reckless snowmobile driver.

"Without a doubt, this person chose to drive on top of the graves and hit the crosses head on," stated Mayor Madeleine Redfern in a press release issued by the city on March 21.

RCMP received a call at 9 p.m. on March 14 that someone was driving a snowmobile in the graveyard in a reckless manner, according to an RCMP press release.

The driver, thought to be a youth, had already fled when police arrived.

Redfern said the city has been in contact with churches and the undertaker to see how the damaged crosses can be replaced.

Families who had crosses damaged are asked to contact the city so replacement crosses can be properly identified.

"The person who did this needs to realize that this was an extremely hurtful and immensely disrespectful to those families affected and to the whole community," Redfern stated.

Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the RCMP.
