INUVIK - Three Fort Simpson dart players have earned the right to represent the territory at the national dart championships.

Brenda Moreau, Louisa Moreau and Steve Godderham all finished in the top nine at the NWT Darts Territorials in Inuvik held from March 18 to 20.

Brenda retained her first place ranking in the women's division while Gooderham and Louisa both had to compete in playoffs.

Gooderham played against Carlo Mitchell of Yellowknife and John Gordan of Inuvik to determine the eighth member of the men's team, the alternate and the 10th place finalist.

The three men were all tied with 16 wins each.

The men played a game of 701, each throwing a dart for the centre of the board to determine which order they would throw. Gooderham placed third in the order.

Mitchell got down from 701 and doubled out first leaving Gooderham and Gordan who reached the double stage at the same time.

By hitting a triple 19 and a double 19 Gooderham checked out before Gordan to secure the alternate position on the team.

"I was pretty ecstatic," he said.

Gooderham was also the alternate on the 2009 team.

If one of the other men on the team is unable to compete he will step forward.

Otherwise he will assist the director of Darts Northwest Territories at the Canadian Adult National Championships in Edmonton from June 14 to 17.

"I was very pleased the way my darts came around," said Gooderham.

Gooderham said the competition among the 25 men from Inuvik, Yellowknife, Fort Simpson and Hay River was not as challenging as last year but that it's always tough.

Louisa competed in a playoff against Louise Kuzman of Inuvik to determine the alternate position and to earn 10th place on the women's team.

Louisa scored lots of one hundreds and doubled out while Kuzman was still in the three or four hundreds.

Although Louisa qualified as an alternate, one member of the team has subsequently dropped out which means Louisa will compete in the nationals. This is the sixth time she has qualified for the event.

"It was fun," Louisa said about the competition.

"It was nice to see all the players again."

The Fort Simpson Darts Society also sent Chris Lake and Sheila Pollard to the competition. It was the second time both players have competed at the territorial level in darts.
