Aglukkaq to run again

IQALUIT - As rumours swirl Canadians might be going back to the polls this spring, Nunavut MP Leona Aglukkaq said she will seek re-election but that an election now would be a "disruption."

Aglukkaq made the comments as she was in Iqaluit unveiling an anti-drug strategy.

"I will seek re-election. Do I want an election? No," she said. "There's so much more work to be done and I want to continue on that path. It's a disruption, in my mind, when we have so many big and challenging issues to deal with in the North as well as in Canada."

In October 2008, Aglukkaq won the riding for the Conservative party with 2,815 votes. Liberal candidate Kirt Ejesiak finished second with 2,349 votes, New Democrat Paul Irngaut got 2,228 votes and Green Party candidate Peter Ittinuar received 669 votes.

The first-time MP was appointed minister of Health, the first Inuk to hold a senior cabinet post.

The Conservative minority government might soon fall either on a opposition party confidence motion related to contempt accusations or the federal budget, set to be unveiled on March 22.

"The opposition should at least wait until they see the budget to decide whether there should be (an election) or not," said Aglukkaq. "But there is talk they are going without even seeing the budget."
