Fourteen members of the Fort Simpson Speed Skating Club competed in the NWT Speed Skating Championships from March 12 to 13. It was one of the largest teams the club has sent to the event, said Val Gendron, the club's coach. All of the skaters did well, she said. "They've improved a lot and they showed a lot of perseverance," said Gendron. Gendron pointed particularly to Sky Lennie who fell three times in the 500 metre midget race but picked herself up each time and kept going. Lennie placed first in the midget E division. Other Fort Simpson skaters in the midget age category included Lia Fabre-Dimsdale who got third in the B division, Harley Betsedea second in C, Newmoon Buggins second in E, Shanelle Arden first in F and Meegwun Cazon second in F. Lia and her brother Sage, who placed first in bantam C, displayed really good technique over the weekend, Gendron said. Other young speedskaters included Elohdie Fabre-Dimsdale and Andrew Reath who competed in fun races in the Rocket age division. Sisters Jamie and Tamara Deneyoua-Nahanni placed third and second respectively in the C peewee division. Both were competing at the territorials for the first time. "It was good," said Tamara. "I fell down but I got back up and skated." Tamara, 6, competed in seven races. She said the races were easy. The younger skaters competed in the 100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 metre races while the older skaters did the 1,000 metres. Robert Harold finished second in the B juvenile boys division while Kevin Roche placed second. Harold used his leg strength to his advantage, Gendron said. The championship was a learning experience for most of the skaters but they all had fun, she said.
