NUNAVUT - A fisheries project in Nunavut is getting a helping hand from the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor).

John Duncan, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor) announced $118,450 in funding on Thursday for a new marketing strategy for Nunavut's fishing industry, with hopes to help it become a more economically-viable industry.

Including contributions from the Nunavut Department of Environment and Industry, the total value of the project is approximately $206,450.

The project will be used for establishing an industry association to co-ordinate the industry, as well as a marketing and branding strategy.

"The Government of Canada is proud to contribute to this project which will help create new national and international consumer demand for Nunavut's high quality seafood," said Minister Duncan in the release.

The investment came through CanNor's Strategic Investments in Northern Economic Development program. The program focuses on economic diversification, capacity building and long-term economic growth for Canada's three Northern territories.
