Collision at highway junction

SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - A collision between a Dodge Caravan and a Pontiac Sunfire at the intersection of Highways 3 and 4 sent four people to hospital Wednesday evening.

The accident was reported to the RCMP at around 6:50 p.m., said Const. Kathy Law.

There were two people in each vehicle, all four were transported to Stanton Territorial Hospital, said Law, who added that there were "no major injuries sustained."

At the time of the collision, the van was turning left onto Highway 3, while the Sunfire was driving into town on Highway 4, Law said.

When asked about the damage to the vehicles, Law only said they both had to be towed.

Police and medical units attended the scene, blocking traffic on Highway 4 at the Niven Gate intersection and on Highway 3 at the intersection with Old Airport Road. At both roadblocks, emergency personnel asked drivers to turn around and go back the way they came.

Law said she wasn't sure how long the roads were blocked, but noted there was a collision analyst on the scene, which would increase the length of the closure.

"It takes them awhile to do all of the measurements, they determine speed of the vehicles and how the accident could possibly have occurred."

The intersection of Highways 3 and 4 was the site of eight collisions in 2009, according to the Department of Transportation's traffic collision facts, released in October 2010.

Of those, two resulted from a vehicle turning left into the path of an oncoming vehicle.

"Over the last couple of months it seems that there have been a higher than average number (of collisions there) and I can't speak to why," said Law. "But again we'd like to encourage the public to slow down and drive according to the road conditions, not necessarily at the speeds that are posted."

The speed limit on Highway 4 in that area is 60 km/h, while on Highway 3 vehicles either encounter a stop sign if they are turning left or a yield sign if they are turning right.

Law was unable to provide the number of collisions at that intersection in 2011 by press time.
