Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development John Duncan announced Akavak's appointment on Dec. 22.

Akavak, 44, from Kimmirut, will assume the position for the next four years. He will be the first permanent chair for the board since June 2008.

The board helps to ensure the protection and wise use of wildlife and wildlife habitat for the long-term benefit of Inuit and Nunavummiut.

He has been the board's executive director for the last year and a half. Akavak was the mayor of Kimmirut from 1997 to 2000.

He has been on the board of directors of the Atuqtuarviq Corporation since 2000. He has also helped in the development of the commercial fishery in the territory.
