Fire cause by stove
Aaron Beswick Northern News Services Published Friday, November 5, 2010
A woman who was cooking at the stove was treated by the Yellowknife fire department for minor injuries, but did not need to go to hospital. "The person had been in the kitchen the whole time, so it wasn't an issue of leaving a pot unattended," said deputy fire chief Gerda Groothuizen. "If you notice something wrong with one of your appliances, you should have an electrician look at it immediately." The fire department responded to the fire at 10:05 a.m. with 18 personnel in two pumper trucks, a rescue unit, command vehicle and two ambulances. "No visible signs of fire or smoke were noted outside the unit on arrival, but upon entry fire suppression crew encountered heavy black smoke," stated a fire department press release, which estimated damage to the two-storey duplex at $25,000. The statement goes on to report the fire was under control 10 minutes after the fire department's arrival.
