Brenda Moreau aims to be among the top 16 in Canada

REGINA - After being edged out of the top spot by a longtime rival, a Fort Simpson darts player has returned from Saskatchewan with a second-place finish.

Brenda Moreau competed in the Saskatchewan Open in Regina from Oct. 22 to 24. Playing in the women's singles division, Moreau advanced from her section to play in the knock-out round. Soon only Moreau and Bonnie LaPierre of Saskatchewan remained.

Although the two darts players have challenged each other in many serious games in the past - Moreau knocked LaPierre out to secure a spot on Team Canada that went to the Americas Cup in 2008 - Moreau said this was their best game yet.

"It was an amazing game," she said.

Both players shot over 60, which brought the numbers down fast. It came down to the doubles with LaPierre needing a double four and Moreau needing a double two. LaPierre doubled out with her first dart

giving her the top spot.

"She's an awesome darts player," Moreau said.

Moreau, who was the only person from the territory to compete in the tournament, said she attended to win points.

By placing in ranking tournaments sanctioned by the National Darts Federation of Canada darts players receive points that are added together to determine their rank in Canada.

Moreau has attended four ranking tournaments this season and is currently ranked 19th among Canadian women.

When the points from her two most recent tournaments are accounted for Moreau expects to jump into the top 16.

"I don't have an ultimate goal in mind, I just want to keep myself in

the top 16," she said.

All players in the top 16 receive an invitation to the World Cup qualifiers. Moreau could also go to the qualifiers if she finished first at the territorials.

Moreau said it's always her goal to reach the qualifiers through the top 16 route because it allows whoever comes second at the territorials to also compete for the chance to play in the World Cup.

"Our team needs more experience," she said.

Looking ahead in the season Moreau plans to attend at least one more ranking tournament, possibly The Snowflake in Edmonton in February. Her goal is to be in the top three at the tournaments she attends.

Moreau thanked Fort Simpson residents for sponsoring her by purchasing bingo tickets from the Fort Simpson Darts Society.
