Anti-Yellowknife videos continue
Nicole Veerman Northern News Services Published Wednesday, October 27, 2010
On Oct. 15, Yellowknife Cooler Chat, a video attacking the territorial government's affirmative action hiring policy, was posted by someone with the user name "pushinarockk." In the video, two government workers, a young man and woman, stand in a break room discussing the original YouTube attack, saying, "I can't believe government workers got off so easy." "They didn't even mention the deeply flawed 'P1 hiring mandate.'" P1 status is given to aboriginal residents born in the NWT, and gives them preference for government jobs and education. The digital man suggests that he landed his government job despite being up against four candidates who were more qualified. As of yesterday, the video had been viewed more than 300 times. The post comes in response to a cutting animated video posted by "Yellowkniferable" on Oct. 5, depicting a female tourist receiving advice about Yellowknife eateries from a young man on the street. On Oct. 17, Yellowkniferable came back with a follow-up video, which received approval from pushinarockk, who commented on YouTube, saying, "I was so inspired by these that I made my own, on government time." The three-and-a-half-minute computer-animated clip titled Helping a Tourist in Yellowknife Pt. 2, depicts the same young man and woman found in the original video, but this time they're government workers. The woman, who was originally a tourist, tells the man she has decided to stay in the city for a year to work for the federal government. The commentator then suggests government workers are unqualified and "good at solitaire." He also warns the woman about dating in Yellowknife, by laying out the convoluted dating history of John Johnson, a pilot who everyone knows. "I guess in Yellowknife you don't lose your girlfriend, you just lose your turn," responds the woman. Like the first video, the commentator also trashes Yellowknife bars and restaurants, including Coyotes, Le Frolic and The Raven. Since it was posted 10 days ago, the video has been viewed more than 3,000 times. Mayor Gord Van Tighem said he's seen a few of the videos and has talked to many people about them. "In talking to people that have seen them, most people are looking at them with some measure of amusement. Nobody's really giving them a lot of credibility." He said having been here as long as he has, he can see where some of the digs are coming from. "(I'm) laughing not so much at the humour, but at the fact that someone is doing it," he said.
