The students from Qiqirtaq High School, ages 16 to 20, will be overseas from Aug. 21 to Aug. 30 as part of Arctic Voice, a project where Nunavut schools are paired with ones in the United Kingdom. A number of Fortrose Academy students visited Gjoa Haven last October. "They've got a wonderful trip planned for us," said Kim Hagarty, a Grades 10, 11 and 12 English teacher at Qiqirtaq. "We'll be going to Edinburgh for a day. We'll be going to Loch Ness to see the Loch Ness monster. We will be going to the school. They've got just a wide range of things planned for us. We're pretty excited." The group will bring drums and traditional clothing to show their hosts and some students will also throat sing. It will be the first time in Scotland for Amber Eleehetook and Angus Hiqiniq. "It's a life experience and I want to see the world, meet new people, travel. I'm excited to see what they do, what they eat, how they dress," said Eleehetook, 16, who jokingly added she's also excited about the nine-hour flight. Hiqiniq, 17, said he looks forward to seeing his friends again and meeting his host family. He said he is participating in the trip "so I can get the experience of travelling and meeting new people." The students raised $35,000 over the last two years to make this trip possible. Other students headed to Scotland are Jessica Hunter, Sharon Makkigak, Andrew Oogak, Emmett Goose, EstherAnn Magaknak and Kristy Porter.
