Riders shine up for car and bike show
Side Door to benefit from dollars raised

Robin Weber will work on on waxing on and off over the next few days to prepare her 1965 Ford Mustang and two motorcycles. "I've got a whole lot of washing to do," she said, adding she'll look for a little help from her friends to get the three vehicles from her house to the Yellowknife Inn parking lot, where the event takes place. Members of the NWT Riders' Association and the Harley Owners' Group (HOG) started talking about organizing the event a couple weeks go, according to Weber. "There hasn't been one this summer and usually there's a least one or two," she said. "But this year there hasn't been one at all, so we thought it'd be nice to get something going." Weber, a member of both groups, said similar past events have been exclusively for bikes. She told Yellowknifer the groups decided to open up the event to cars, since there is no classic car group in the city. "It just makes it a little more interesting for people," she said. She's hoping for a big turnout, but admits the venue might restrict numbers. "We don't have a lot of space," Weber said. "We're hoping that everybody is going to fit in that parking lot." In past years, the street was closed for similar events. "We didn't plan that far ahead," she said. Tanya Kasteel, president of the Harley Owners' Group (HOG), said she's hoping for a big turnout. Five dollars will buy people lunch while they look, Kasteel said, and proceeds from all admissions will go to the Side Door Youth Ministry. "It's really all about family and giving back to the community," she said. "It feels good to do something when you know the money is staying here." Spectators can vote for their favourite vehicles, and enter draws to win prizes donated by local businesses. Registration for those who want to show off their wheels will begin at 12 p.m.. The public is invited for food and to take in the sights from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.. Contact the NWT Riders' Association for more information.
