IQALUIT - Two Cambridge Bay residents injured during a shooting that took place in the community in January 2007 testified in court on May 28, along with a neighbour who witnessed the event.

Antoinette Bernhardt, Logan Pigalak and Susie Mannilaq all testified during the trial of Chris Bishop, who is charged with three counts of second degree murder and two counts of attempted murder.

Keith Atatahak (Tumma), 28, Kevin Komaksiut, 22 and Dean Costa, 29, all died while Bernhardt and Pigalak were both injured during the shooting.

On the night of Jan. 6, the four men and two other women were drinking at the home of Bernhardt and Atatahak at 4A Kulik Road, the housing complex beside Bishop's house, Bernhardt said.

Bernhardt and Atatahak were in a common-law relationship.

The group had been drinking two 60-ounce bottles of vodka, she said.

Bernhardt testified she could hear the men, who were in the kitchen playing poker, getting angry. She said they were angry with Bishop and left to go to his house, 6B Kulik Road.

About five minutes later, the men returned saying they hadn't seen Bishop. They continued drinking, she said.

Less than an hour later, they headed out to Bishop's house again.

Bernhardt said she went out her front door to have a cigarette and could hear yelling coming from Bishop's house. She then began walking in the direction of 6B Kulik when she heard gunshots. She turned around and ran back towards her house, she said.

"I was running as fast as I could," she said.

Bernhardt said she then felt a "big throb" in her left arm, where she had been shot. After getting into her house, she said she returned outside to look for Atatahak.

She said she saw police trucks and the town's bylaw truck outside and asked a community member where Atatahak (Tumma) was.

"He grabbed me with both arms and told me Tumma was dead," she said.

Neighbour Susie Mannilaq said she watched the shooting take place from her bedroom window at 3B Kulik Street.

Mannilaq said Atatahak, Komaksiut and Pigalak were her nephews. She said she was sleeping when she heard gunshots at approximately 3 a.m. on Jan 6.

Mannilaq said she saw Bishop with a gun and a man on the ground in front of his house. She then saw another man running before hearing a gunshot and watching him fall to his knees.

"He was on his knees and he was crawling, and then he never moved again," said Mannilaq, who cried throughout her testimony.

Pigalak, Atatahak's brother who was with the three men when they broke into Bishop's home, also testified on May 28. Pigalak testified that there was no warning before the gunfire.

More witnesses including Cambridge Bay RCMP officers are expected to be called as the trial continues.
