HAY RIVER - A man from British Columbia is facing drug charges in Hay River after the RCMP raided a hotel room on May 4.

During the drug seizure at the North Country Inn, police arrested one man and seized just over three-quarters of a pound (more than 340 grams) of marijuana, and a small amount of cash.

A gram of marijuana typically sells for about $20 in Hay River, which makes the street value of the seized marijuana roughly $6,800.

The accused, 44, is from Ashcroft, B.C., a community in the south central interior of the province.

The man has been charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking and possession of property obtained by crime.

The police have not released the amount of money seized, but the charge is for possession of less than $5,000.

The accused is scheduled to appear in Hay River territorial court on June 24.

Police officers obtained a search warrant to enter and search the hotel room.

RCMP Cpl. Mike Carter said the seizure was the result of a tip from the public.

Carter said the accused was unknown to police in Hay River before the arrest.

"We don't believe there are any affiliations in town," he said.

The arrest, which occurred in the early evening of May 4, was carried out without incident.

Carter said the suspect was co-operative with police.
