The fight of his life
Darrell Greer Northern News Services Published Wednesday, April 28, 2010
Kivalliq Inuit Association (KIA) president Jose Kusugak, 59, was recently diagnosed with bladder cancer in Winnipeg. Kusugak's treatment is scheduled to begin during the first week of May. Among the positions listed on Kusugak's impressive resume are six years as president of Nunavut Tunngavik Inc., and another six years as president of the national Inuit organization Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami. The KIA made the announcement on Kusugak's illness this past week, after he decided to go public with his diagnosis to encourage people to have regular examinations with a doctor or nurse. In a written press release, KIA vicepresident Joe Kaludjak voiced the organization's support for Kusugak as he begins the battle to regain his health. "Jose Kusugak is a well known and respected leader," wrote Kaludjak. "The KIA board's thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Kusugak and his family as he battles this sickness." The KIA will release more information after Kusugak's initial treatment in May.
