Counterfeit bust
Police lay three charges after fake $50 bill turns up at business Tim Edwards Northern News Services Published Wednesday, March 24, 2010
The total amount of fake money was still under investigation on Tuesday, but the bills seized were $5, $50, and $100 bills, according to police. The man appeared in court on Monday, facing three charges relating to counterfeiting. He will remain in jail until his next court appearance on April 6. No counterfeiting machinery was found - just normal computer equipment, which was not seized - and police are still investigating how the fake cash was made, according to Const. Kathy Law with the RCMP. As well, she said police don't believe more people were involved. "At this time, I don't think that they're looking at anybody else," said Law. A number of phoney bills had recently been given to several local businesses and deposited in banks, according to an RCMP press release. An employee of a local business called the police after a man used a counterfeit $50 bill on March 17, Law said. "They were poor quality, it was not difficult to tell (the money was counterfeit). The business owner was able to tell," said Law. RCMP then obtained a search warrant and arrested the accused at his home. Several counterfeit bills were seized at that time. Law said people who are unsure of the validity of their cash can look on the Bank of Canada website, which describes ways to identify counterfeit cash. People can also take the suspicious money to the RCMP detachment and have the police take a look at it, said Law.
