Reading rocks
Jeanne Gagnon Northern News Services Published Monday, March 1, 2010
The Grade 7 student said it took her two weeks to read them. "I'm happy and proud because I was the first one," she said. "My favourite book was the one about the Jonas Brothers because I really like them. Joe is my favourite!" She added she enjoys reading because she also learns new things along the way. The May Hakongak Community Library started the Reading Rocks program in February for the community's children and youth. After each book they read, participants write down titles and authors of the books they've read within the rocks of an Inukshuk illustration. They'll receive a prize once they've read 10 books. Those who achieve that milestone every month will be entered into a draw for another prize. Assistant librarian Susie Kununak said more children are interested in reading since the program started. "It's awesome! I think it's great that there are rewards because it encourages the children to read," she said. Librarian Carmen Firlotte agrees the program has been effective at stimulating interest in reading. "Since introducing the program, I've noticed the children have been more eager to sit down and read an entire book. More and more children are now wanting to join," she said. - with files from Renee Krucas
