INUVIK - The Samuel Hearne Secondary School Wolverines went undefeated and captured the girls division championship at the Samuel Hearne Secondary School 3-on-3 basketball tournament held from March 9 to 11.

Forty students participated in three-day tournament in support of the national Heart and Stroke Foundation Hoops for Heart program, in which schools across the country get involved in basketball initiatives while at the same time raising money for the foundation.

Students are still fundraising and Lorne Guy, event organizer and SHSS vice-principal, said the school hopes to raise $1,000 for the cause.

The Wolverines squad made up of Chelsea Elias, Chloe Larocque, Brandi Larocque, Monica Bonnetplume and Darielle Bonnetplume, arrived at Thursday's championship game a perfect 5 and 0 in round robin play and won the six-team women's division by beating out the Fire Flies by a score of 2-0.

Meanwhile, The Roost turned out to be the dark horse in the boys division, finishing off round robin play with a 4-2 record as they faced off against undefeated Georges Geeks (6-0) in the championship game.

But the The Roost, which boasted the likes of Matthew Skinner, Julius Dimaano, Chris Church and Christian Van Vliet, managed to pull out a 5-4 victory.

Guy said he was delighted by the students' commitment to both fundraising and playing hard.

"We had an exciting crop of young players show their talents this week," he said. "It was nice to feed off of the junior girls recent NWT championship.

"All the kids are to be commended for their fine play, good sportsmanship, and school spirit."
