In the final draw Alberta managed to win 6-5 over previously undefeated Team Ontario by winning an extra end.

It was Kevin's first time playing at the tournament.

"The first half (of the draw) we played rough," said Kevin, skip for Alberta.

"In the second half we were able to capitalize and we played awesome.

"The competition was good and that's what made the event special. It was a tight game and we managed to pull through."

Kevin, 35, moved to Alberta from the Northwest Territories to study commerce at the University of Calgary.

Kevin's brother, Jamie Koe, 32, was the skip for Team NWT/Yukon, which finished in last place with a 1-10 standing.

Fred Koe, Kevin's father expressed his joy over his son's victory.

"Words can't describe it," said Fred. "I am bursting with pride to have one of my boys win the final."

Fred and his wife Linda travelled to Halifax to watch the Brier dividing their time between both son's matches.

Fred said the draw was the best Brier final he has ever seen.

"They obviously did pretty well at the end but they were pretty consistent throughout the tournament in building up momentum," said Fred.

"They had some losses but those were wake-up calls."

The two brothers faced off against each other last Thursday, resulting in a 8-3 win for Alberta.

Alberta's standing going into the finals was 8-3. The team had lost against British Columbia, Nova Scotia and Ontario before entering the finals.

Kevin Koe and crew will represent Canada at the world championship which will be held April 3 to 11 in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy.
