Christmas cheer for all
Andrew Rankin Northern News Services Published Wednesday, December 23, 2009
His five-year-old cousin Ronnie Stewart prefers the big glowing snowman standing nearby.
Shaun's dad Kevin Campbell prefers the train carrying Tigger, Mickey Mouse and Santa Claus sitting just a few feet away from Frosty. The three contrasting opinions suit Kevin just fine. He's the creator of this Christmas wonderland that illuminates his yard on Mackenzie Road. "My family and I enjoy Christmas very much," said Campbell. "If we can see children walk by and it puts a smile on their face or it lights up their eyes, then that puts a smile on our faces." It's been wowing children and adults alike since he put the fascinating display together on Dec. 3. Passersby can't help but gaze at the spectacle. One corner boasts a giant owl donning a Santa Claus hat. There's smiling penguin on the other corner. In between sits a fat Christmas tree adorned with presents. The Christmas village runs on electricity and some strategically placed fans blow inside the characters. Most of the equipment Campbell picked up down south. For the past few years he's been creative with his holiday yard displays. Whether it's giant snow globes or carousels, the displays are meant to help spread the joy of the holiday. And there have been more than a few children stopping and gazing in wonder. Campbell said that's part of what makes the festive season such a magical time. "Everybody kind of forgets their troubles and thinks about the nice things," he said. "People who normally keep to themselves go out of their way to say Merry Christmas. It's a pretty amazing holiday season."
