The buzz about bullying
Tim Edwards Northern News Services Published Friday, November 6, 2009
"They were pretty excited when they found out the Family Channel was coming," said Wendy Wile, the school counsellor. A Family Channel film crew arrived with the star as school started in the morning, and they filmed all the students in the school gym doing the wave, which will become part of a nationwide wave composed of different schools around Canada. The wave is where multiple people – usually a crowd – stand up and raise their hands in a succession that resembles a wave. Each taped school represents one of the time-zones in Canada. The episode will be broadcast on Nov. 20 on the Family Channel as part of a segment on raising awareness about bullying. Wile said the students were familiar with "The Latest Buzz" and when they found out one of its actors would be coming to their school, the excitement ran high. "The buzz around school was 'Oh, I hope it's Wilder. I hope they send Wilder,'" said Wile. Wilder is a video game-obsessed character on the kids' show, played by Munro Chambers. The students were pleasantly surprised to find out it actually was Chambers who was coming. "When they found out it was (Chambers), oh, they were just crazy," said Wile. "Especially the girls. They're still on cloud nine." This opportunity came about because of an 11-year-old student named Ben Elkin, who saw a commercial for the contest while watching the Family Channel. He sent a letter to the channel on Sept. 21 to put Mildred Hall School in the draw to be selected as one of the schools to take part in the anti-bullying campaign. "I saw it on TV and I thought it would be a good idea," said Elkin Scott Campbell, a spokesperson the Family Channel, said that it was a random draw, and the channel tries to get out into communities around Canada every year to raise awareness about bullying, around the time of National Bullying Awareness week, which is from Nov. 15 to 21 this year. "There's always a sort of grassroots rally every year," said Campbell. The rally at Mildred Hall kicked off with the filming of the wave, then Chambers spoke with the students. The school was also treated to a new anti-bullying episode of The Latest Buzz, which has not yet aired on TV. After the show, Campbell talked with the students again and sought their input on bullying. At the end of the event students got the chance to get their picture taken with Chambers. Elkin said his favourite part of the day was getting to talk one-on-one with Chambers. "It was pretty cool," said Elkin. Chambers, a 19-year-old actor from Toronto, said this was his first time in the North, and he was disappointed that he only got to spend a couple days here. "When I found out I was going to Yellowknife I was very excited," said Chambers. "It's so beautiful." He said his own experience with being bullied in elementary school has made helping with the anti-bullying campaign very rewarding. "Having gone through it, I feel the responsibility to come out and tell people it's not good," said Chambers.
