Spooky points in Baker
Darrell Greer Northern News Services Published Wednesday, November 11, 2009
The school had a week-long slate of afternoon Halloween activities for students to have a few laughs, earn valuable house points and increase school spirit. This was the third year Jonah Amitnaaq held the Halloween activities. The house league groups feature four teams: wolf, muskox, caribou and grizzly. At the end of the school year, the winning team has its name engraved on a plaque with the year it won the house league title. The plaque is then displayed in the school's trophy cabinet. Grade 10 teacher Chris Snow arranged this year's activities, which ranged from a costume contest, to Halloween trivia and a door-decorating competition. He said each activity also helped build teamwork skills, in addition to school spirit. "The students take a great deal of pride in earning house points, and that really adds to our school spirit," said Snow. "Most of them really had a blast this year, as they do every year. "Everyone really enjoyed the costume contest. "There were many great costumes, but our panel of judges awarded Rahabi Nattak, who was dressed as Sedna, top spot because of how great she looked and her costume was culturally inclusive." Snow said the vast majority of students took part in the Halloween activities in one way or another. He said most of the activities brought out a particular skill set among the students. "Whether it was designing a door, being able to dress fashionably in orange and black, or excelling at pop trivia, many of the kids had a chance to show off an area they excel in. "The Halloween activities will continue in the years to come because the kids really look forward to it. "There's a genuine buzz in our school during Halloween week."
