DEH GAH GOT'IE KOE/FORT PROVIDENCE - The driver of an SUV is dead after he swerved to avoid bison and rolled the vehicle, ending up upside down in a ditch outside Fort Providence.

The accident took place as the vehicle was heading southbound around a corner near Chan Lake, outside of Fort Providence on Oct. 2 at about 9:30 p.m., according to RCMP Const. Dave Sullivan.

Sullivan said that the driver of the vehicle was not from the NWT.

The other two occupants of the SUV, all male, escaped without major injuries and did not have to go to the hospital.

"The investigation hasn't concluded and I can't give out any names because I'm not sure who all's been contacted on behalf of the deceased," he added.

Sullivan, an officer at the Fort Providence detachment, said wet snow, darkness and the bison on the road, ultimately led to the accident. No alcohol was involved.

The accident was reported by a driver who passed by the scene on the way to Fort Providence.
