Man killed in rollover

DEH GAH GOT'IE KOE/FORT PROVIDENCE - One man died in a vehicle rollover on Friday night at about 9:30 p.m. while heading around a corner near Chan Lake on Highway 3, outside of Fort Providence.

According to Constable Dave Sullivan, the rest of the occupants of the SUV, all male, escaped without major injuries and did not have to go to the hospital.

"The vehicle was heading southbound... by Chan Lake, and as it was coming around the corner it looked like they saw some buffalo on the road and swerved and missed them, and ended up upside down in a ditch," explained Sullivan.

"The investigation hasn't concluded and I can't give out any names because I'm not sure who all's been contacted on behalf of the deceased."

Sullivan, an officer at the Fort Providence detachment, said wet snow coming down that night, combined with the darkness and the bison on the road, may have led to the accident.

Someone saw the wreck of the accident on their way into Fort Providence and let the detachment know. Police headed out to the scene right away, according to Sullivan.

Sullivan said the driver of the vehicle was not from the NWT, but he wasn't absolutely sure on the other occupants.
