RANKIN INLET - A nine-year-old girl was scheduled to have an exciting day this week after being named Rankin Inlet's junior fire chief earlier this month.

Cathy Arnarauyak was one of about 60 school kids who attended an open house at the Rankin fire station during Fire Prevention Week.

Each of the kids who attended the Oct. 11 event had their name entered into a draw for the distinction of becoming Rankin's junior fire chief.

Rankin Fire Chief Ambrose Karlik said most of the kids who attended the open house were accompanied by their parents.

He said the kids toured the station, were shown different types of equipment the firefighters use, and engaged in a talk with some brigade members on the importance of fire safety.

"Everyone seemed to have a really good time and we were happy to see that," said Karlik.

"They were almost all elementary-aged kids, and they were very interested in our talk and the gear we showed them."

Arnarauyak received a certificate proclaiming her junior fire chief for a day, as well as a gift package valued at $300.

The package contained Arnarauyak's very own junior fire chief helmet and bunker gear.

The prize was supplied by the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs.

A special ceremony was held at the fire station this past Wednesday, Oct. 21, to present Arnarauyak with her prizes.

Karlik said Rankin's volunteer firefighters always look forward to spending time with kids in the community.

He said the junior fire chief program is an annual event the department enjoys taking part in.

"Cathy, in her role as junior fire chief, was slated to spend a day on the job with me this week.

"She was also expected to attend an official fire meeting and have lunch with the firefighters.

"Other highlights were a meeting with Mayor John Hickes and getting to take a ride around the community in the fire truck as part of the official crew.

"We're already looking ahead to next year, and it's hoped the Office of the Fire Marshal will be distributing calendars for Fire Prevention Week in 2010."
