'No part of the city is immune'
Lauren McKeon Northern News Services Published Wednesday, October 14, 2009
"The thefts have been ongoing ... It seems to be coming in waves and no part of the city is immune. It could be from Finlayson or it could be from 47 Street," said RCMP Const. Todd Scaplen. There were three thefts last week alone, but police have not yet made any arrests. He added Yellowknifers are still a bit too trusting with leaving their vehicles unlocked. Among the most common items stolen are iPods, cameras, laptops and loose change, Scaplen said. "We want to remind people to secure their valuables and to make sure their vehicles are locked and secured as well. There hasn't been the smash and grab type of thing going on," he said. "People are getting stuff stolen when they're parked in their own driveways." The RCMP is looking for anybody with information on the crimes to come forward. Scaplen said Yellowknifers who have a tendency to leave their doors unlocked should check their cars. "I bet you there's actually people out there that have been victims and don't know it yet, because they've left their vehicles unlocked and they haven't looked for their iPod yet, or their camera," he said.
