Elizabeth McMillan Northern News Services Published Friday, September 4, 2009
The proceeds came from the Midnight Sun Dinner and Dance, that was held June 27 during the Yellowknife 75th Homecoming festival. Members of the committee include Brown, Jeannie Rocher, Ann Hall, Lorie Piro, Cleo Bromley and Mary Anne Woytuik. The groups that received money included: the Food Rescue Program, Yellowknife Marine Rescue Society, Garden of Hope, city clean-up volunteers, Stanton Territorial Hospital Foundation, the Yellowknife Rotary Club, the SideDoor Youth Centre and Yellowknife Homecare. There was also a donation made to the new dementia centre. The organizing committee said they wanted to thank everyone who took part in the dinner and dance and the many volunteers who made the event possible. It was Yellowknife's fourth Dinner and Dance. Brown said she's pleased the event continues to be a success. "I started it eight years ago. We were getting together for too many funerals. Someone said, 'you know Mick, you throw a good party.' I said 'I'm going to need some help,'" Brown explained. "The old timers like it," she said, adding that plans are in the works to hold another event in two years. Eight hundred people bought tickets to this year's event and 60 people were on the waiting list. |
