Students to teach NWT history
Katie May Northern News Services Published Monday, July 6, 2009
Out of 40 students who participated in the Inuvik Territorial Historica Fair in May, four were selected to show off their projects at the national historica fair in Ottawa from July 7 to 13.
The chosen projects are "A Place to Stand, A Place to Grow: Ontario" by Shania Clark of St. Joseph Middle School in Yellowknife, "L'enquete de Berger - Pipeline de la vallee Mackenzie" by Hannah Hoeffer and Sophia Grogono of William McDonald Middle School in Yellowknife, "Quaq" by Karly King Simpson of Sir Alexander Mackenzie School in Inuvik, and "Yamoria" by Angel Mackeinzo of Ehtseo Ayha School in Deline.
Karly, who's going into Grade 7 at Sir Alexander Mackenzie next year, said she learned all about quaq - frozen raw meat or fish - from interviewing elders and trying her hand at making it herself.
"I didn't know anything about it ever before, and I did the project and now I know a lot about it," she said. "It's really fun doing projects because you can learn so many new things."
She's bringing some quaq - and an ulu to cut it with - along with her to Ottawa.
Angel, who'll be in Grade 9 next fall, said she was "shocked" when she found out she'd be going to nationals with her project about Yamoria, the legendary Dene medicine man and lawmaker. She chose Yamoria as her subject after hearing her grandfather tell stories about him.
"I was pretty excited," she said, adding that this will be her first trip south.
Sophia, who completed her project on Justice Thomas Berger's inquiry into the Mackenzie Valley pipeline with classmate Hannah over a couple of months, will be representing the project in Ottawa. She said they were both happy their project was chosen.
"We worked really hard, so it wasn't like a huge surprise, I guess. But we were really excited," she said. "We learned a lot about how Thomas Berger communicated with everyone, because he was like one of the first people who realized that the North wasn't just, like, land - it was the home of somebody."
The pressure is off for this trip - their projects won't be judged at nationals, so the students have a chance to teach other young people about their subjects.
