EDMONTON - A man from Fort Smith has been charged in connection with a Canada Day killing in Edmonton.

Augustine Darren Poitras, 42, has been charged with second-degree murder and possession of an offensive weapon.

Poitras was arrested by Edmonton police on July 21.

According to information from the Edmonton Police Service, officers responded to a report of an injured male at about 11:49 p.m. on July 1 at a transit terminal located at 100 Avenue and 100 Street in the city's downtown.

Paramedics treated the 42-year-old male victim, but he was pronounced dead in hospital.

According to the police, a preliminary investigation indicated an argument broke out between two males, which led to one of the men being assaulted.

A spokesperson for the Edmonton Police Service declined to say what kind of weapon was used in the incident.

However, Edmonton media reported the victim was stabbed and the incident was witnessed by passengers on a bus.

The police said tips from the public were instrumental in helping lead to an arrest.

Poitras, who is being held in custody, is scheduled to appear in Alberta Provincial Court in Edmonton on July 30.
