Child porn handed to RCMP
Lauren McKeon Northern News Services Published Monday, July 13, 2009
Caesar Arnatsiaq of Iglulik was in the Nunavut Court of Justice July 8 to face charges of sexual interference with a minor and possession of child pornography. Both incidents dated back to August 2008. On Aug. 11, 2008 Arnatsiaq went to at the local RCMP detachment and handed over a DVD full of child pornography downloaded from the Internet. At the time Arnatsiaq called the pornography "disturbing" and said he had cleared his computer of all remaining pictures but wanted RCMP to be aware the images were out there. It was the Crown's argument, however, that Arnatsiaq came to the detachment because he couldn't stop himself from looking at the pictures and wanted help. "He came looking for help. He couldn't help himself," said Helena Solin, Crown prosecutor on the possession of child pornography charge. Judge Beverley Brown agreed. "I think computers can be addictive ... You were slipping to the dark side (of computers) and I'm glad you stopped yourself. You deserve credit for that." In a separate incident in August, Arnatsiaq had a 13-year-old "over at his house at which time he took advantage by having sexual intercourse with her," said Marian Bryant, Crown prosecutor on the sexual interference charge. Defense lawyer Andrew Maher said Arnatsiaq did nothing to stop the intercourse from occurring but added Arnatsiaq said he believed she was consenting. While Maher said, "He has to go to jail, there's no question about that," he asked for a sentence in the range of nine to 12 months. Brown called the sentencing "difficult" but added one thing was clear: "An adult cannot have sex with a person under 14. Period. End of sentence. End of thought." In addition to 14 months in jail, Arnatsiaq was also given 18 months probation, will have his name added to the sex offender registry and will have to provide a DNA sample. When asked if he had anything to say to the court, he responded, "No, thank you."
