Yellowknife man hit with $1,840 in fines
Cara Loverock Northern News Services Published Friday, July 10, 2009
Gordon Murray was charged under the noise bylaw after he spent "several minutes" yelling at a library employee on May 31, said Kerry Penney, manager of legal services with the City of Yellowknife. She said Murray was upset over the perceived firing of another library employee. Other staff became concerned and contacted the RCMP. Murray eventually was convinced to leave by the employee he was yelling at, but he left behind his business card. Murray admitted to Judge Robert Gorin in territorial court on Tuesday that he did break the bylaw. "I proceeded to be loud and obnoxious," he said, but he denied blocking the doorway when the employee tried to leave the room, of which he had also been accused. However, Murray said he did not "use what I consider to be profanity." Murray was fined $200 plus a surcharge of $30. At the same hearing, he also pleaded guilty to driving with a blood alcohol level over the legal limit, driving without a seatbelt and driving with a suspended licence. Crown prosecutor Terri Nguyen said on March 21 at roughly 4:30 a.m. the RCMP saw a vehicle driving down Franklin Avenue which "began weaving in its lane." Police stopped the vehicle and spoke to Murray. "The driver started talking about how much he respects officers and seemed confused as to why the RCMP officer was there," said Nguyen. He was arrested and a breathalyzer found him to be over the legal limit. Murray was also found to be driving with a suspended licence on May 13 and driving without a seat belt on May 13, 2008. "I have had lots of fun with the law," said Murray when shown his criminal record by Nguyen. "I've made some stupid mistakes," he said. Gorin fined Murray $1,000 for driving over the legal limit, $300 for driving with a suspended license and $100 for driving without a seatbelt, as well as a total of $210 in surcharges. "In my opinion you are more than fair," said Murray after his sentencing, adding he plans to "grow up."
