SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - Driving back from a vacation in 1996, Ann Hall noticed Yellowknife was impeccably clean. She later realized the reason behind it was a visit from the Queen of England.

"I was amazed at how clean it was at first," she said. "But now I know what we are capable of. If (Yellowknife) can be clean for the Queen, it can be clean for residents too."

Born and raised in Yellowknife, Hall said she is used to seeing the annual spring mess that plagues the streets once the snow melts. But in light of the YK75 homecoming happening later in June, she said it would be nice to get the city rid of garbage as much as possible.

"It would be really nice to have the the city nice and clean for the people who are coming home," she said. "I am proud of Yellowknife being my home town, and I want to see it clean."

The arrival of spring brings about a huge number of complaints regarding the amount of litter found downtown and in ditches, and Hall said she is among the people gabbing about garbage. However, she decided that as part of the community, it is her responsibility to do something about it.

"As long as I complain, I have to do something," she said. "This
is my contribution."
