Cyclist hit by car in Northland
Andrew Livingstone Northern News Services Published Wednesday, June 3, 2009
A call came into the RCMP at approximately 4:10 p.m. about a cyclist who was struck by a vehicle. RCMP and two ambulances arrived on scene to find a woman lying on the street. She was placed on a spine board and put onto a stretcher before being taken to nearby Stanton Territorial Hospital. RCMP Const. Kathy Law said there was no information on any injuries sustained during the accident. Law said the driver of the vehicle was very helpful and stayed on scene until medical attention and police arrived. She also said the driver and the cyclist agreed there was no fault by either party involved. A man was seen speaking with police officers and standing beside a brown-coloured pick-up truck stopped at the scene when Yellowknifer arrived. "There is no criminal charges being filed and the file has been concluded," said Law. "It doesn't show any fault on the file we have." With nicer weather upon us, more cyclists and pedestrians are out, and Law said it's important for drivers to be more cautious at this time of year with so many people outside enjoying the warmer temperatures. "When there is more people riding bicycles we see more incidents," she said. "Motorists should be very careful around pedestrians and bicyclists, especially kids. We ask people take a couple extra seconds to make sure it's safe to proceed." Law also said cyclists should wear a helmet at all times and try to use their hand signals to reduce any possible chance of being involved in an accident.
