Drug bust in Fort Smith
Paul Bickford Northern News Services Published Monday, June 1, 2009
The RCMP executed a search warrant at a Fort Smith residence on May 22 and seized 4.5 grams of crack cocaine. A male and a female were arrested during the search on suspicion of drug-related offences. According to the RCMP, Clayton Waniandy, 21, has been charged with trafficking, possession for the purpose of trafficking and breaching a conditional sentence order from a previous unrelated conviction. Waniandy will remain in custody until an appearance in territorial court on June 23. The female was released from custody and will not be charged, according to the RCMP. Two brothers from High Level, Alta., Steven Boucher, 28, and Darren Boucher, 30, have been charged with trafficking as a result of the drug seizure. However, as of the middle of last week, the brothers had not been located and warrants have been issued for their arrest. RCMP Cpl. Scott Young said it is believed the Bouchers are not in Fort Smith. Young described the seizure of 4.5 grams of crack cocaine as significant. "For a town this small, any amount of crack cocaine can be viewed as substantial," he said. Young would not comment on how the drugs got to Fort Smith, saying the investigation is still ongoing. The seized drugs have an estimated street value of less than $1,000, he said. The corporal said crack cocaine can sell for roughly $120-$150 a gram in the NWT. The price depends on a variety of factors, including the size and isolation of a community, Young said. |
