SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - Councillors have begun discussing what they would like to see in the 2010 city budget.

Social issues were front and centre for some councillors, while city beautification and environmental issues were touched on by others. Councillor Mark Heyck asked that council look at allocating money for the social plan and affordable housing studies, even if they aren't complete by the time budget discussions roll around.

"I think we need to start thinking about budgeting figures to get going on the next step," Heyck said.

Behind the affordable housing initiative were Coun. Shelagh Montgomery and Coun. Lydia Bardak.

Coun. Paul Falvo encouraged the inclusion of a curbside recycling program, something he has been interested in doing for quite some time.

There was talk of increasing trail systems as well as a crossing to connect the Frame Lake trail system to the Niven Lake trail system across Highway 4 near the visitors centre.

Councillors Dave McCann and Bob Brooks said they were interested in seeing better efficiency within city departments.

At Monday's Priorities, Policies and Budget Committee meeting, councillors provided administration with a list of things they would like to see included in the 2010 budget, even though some councillors may not be there for the budget process.

City council's overall expenditures for 2009 was $59.2 million. Capital expenditures totalled $24 million.

Residents go to the polls October 19 to elect a new city council.
