Rising to the occasion

HAY RIVER - Schools from the Deh Cho sent contingents to the 2009 Track and Field Championships in Hay River from June 3 to 5 and many of the athletes returned with medals.

The top star was Fort Simpson's Alicia Norris. The Thomas Simpson School team member added to her Youth Athlete of the Year win at the Sport North Awards last month as she won the 400-metre, 800-metre and 1,500-metre races in the bantam girls' division.

On the men's side, Mike Leishman of Deh Gah School managed to set a new mark in the master men's shot put on June 5 with a throw of 9.62 metres, shattering the old mark by more than a metre. Leishman said getting the new record was all part of the plan.

"Not to sound cocky, but I knew I would beat it," he said. "I had been practising with a heavier shot at the school and I was breaking the record with it."

His first throw broke the original mark of 8.53 metres, his second throw broke the first throw's record and the final throw set the record that stands today.

"I felt confident," he said. "I warmed up by cleaning the Legion that morning (where the school stayed) and I brought the shot I had been practising with from the school."

His teammate, Christopher Carson, said others in attendance noticed Leishman was ready.

"Roger Vail (from Fort Smith) was saying he was a natural athlete," he said.

"He mentioned Mike would be someone to look out for."

Deh Gah student Roland Nadli, 17, took home first place in the junior boys' 200 metres and added a third place in the long jump. He said he was nervous right before the race.

"I had butterflies," he said. "I talked to some guys before the race and that helped me a bit."

While others were winning races, some were there for a taste of the experience. Chief Julian Yendo School of Wrigley sent a small team and came away with eight total points, but coach Shawn Alli said his crew enjoyed the event.

"It's less about the competition and more about the fun," he said.

"It's not all about coming first, second or third.

"We like the sportsmanship."
