Firefighters put on their dancing shoes
Andrew Rankin Northern News Services Published Thrusday, April 30, 2009
"There's nothing wrong with disco," he said. "It brings back my generation. I looked kinky and weird but it won't work out now and I'm a little heavier than I was."
It's been a few decades since the 58-year-old was part of that scene. But come Saturday, the town fire chief plans to approach the all-night affair with John Travolta-like vigour. "It's the one time of year we all get together with our wives and spouses, girlfriends and what not and enjoy each other's company," he said. "We appreciate each other. We hope the community appreciates us at the same time." German started the annual event 22 years ago. Since then it's been taken over by a committee of volunteer firefighters who have introduced a different theme each year. It doesn't happen overnight. The process of organizing the event usually starts in January. "I've got kind of a weird group and they've got a weird sense of humour," German said about some of the more unconventional themes over the years. Apart from the disco dancing there will be plenty of fun to be had at the rec centre venue. Cocktails will be served at 6 p.m., with a prime rib and seafood dinner served at 7 p.m. A hypnotist show is even scheduled, along with a firefighters' awards ceremony. It's always a main draw for the community and he said he's expecting the same this year. "We keep it fun and exciting. That's why everyone shows up," he said. "We must be doing something right." Fellow firefighter Paul Ritchie agrees. He said he can't wait for Saturday. But he also hopes people will take time to appreciate the hard work of local firefighters and their commitment to community. "It's an excuse to go out and have a good time, to cut loose and enjoy ourselves. It's a time to celebrate all the hard work that we do, too." Tickets are still available and can be purchased from firefighters. |
