SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - An altercation between two youths ended in the multiple stabbing of a 15-year-old boy on Range Lake Road early Sunday morning. According to RCMP at around 3:20 a.m. on Sunday they received a call for assistance at a home on Range Lake Road.

The altercation "happened out on the street and the victim went to the house to call for help," said RCMP Const. Kathy Law.

When police arrived on the scene, emergency medical services were already there. The victim was stabbed three times. Police are not disclosing where his stab wounds were. He was taken to Stanton Territorial Hospital and later medevaced to Edmonton, where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries, according to RCMP. The teen was in stable condition as of Monday.

Law said RCMP, with the help of a police services dog and dog handler from High Level, Alta., assisted in the search for the perpetrator. The K-9 unit happened to be in Yellowknife to help with the case of human remains discovered last Friday.

The search of the area began immediately after arriving on scene. A 14-year-old youth found hiding roughly half a kilometre from the scene has been charged with one count of aggravated assault. RCMP stated in a press release that the youth charged was released to his parents by a justice of the peace on Monday and must follow court conditions while out of police custody.

The youth is scheduled to appear in court on July 6.
