Peter Turner was convicted of driving with a blood alcohol level over the legal limit after RCMP spotted him driving on Jan. 24. He was seen driving a truck into the Mac's convenience store parking lot at Franklin Avenue and Forrest Drive "at a high rate of speed" said Crown prosecutor Sandy Aitken. Police observed the vehicle leave the parking lot, drive through a red light and down Forrest Drive. RCMP had trouble keeping up with the car as they attempted to pull it over. Aitken said the truck ran through a stop sign before eventually stopping. "A strong smell of liquor was noted on Mr. Turner's breath," she said. Following the incident, Turner's licence was suspended for 90 days. On March 4, he was spotted driving by an RCMP officer who recognized Turner and was aware he was not to be driving. Police stopped him and charged him with driving with a suspended licence. Turner declined to speak when asked if he had anything to say to the court. "It was reckless," Judge Robert Gorin said of Turner's driving while intoxicated. Gorin fined Turner, who was previously convicted in 2006 for drug-related offences, $1,380 for the charge of driving over the legal limit and $345 for driving with a suspended licence. He was also banned from driving for one year. |
