SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - Former Yellowknife lawyer Charles McGee, charged with possession of child pornography and breach of probation, will choose his mode of trial on May 19.

Speaking to the matter on Tuesday, Crown prosecutor Janice Walsh said the case had "voluminous forensic analysis" and asked for time to go through the facts of the case.

"All of the resident judges would have a conflict with this matter," said territorial court Judge Robert Gorin.

McGee was previously convicted in 2006 for sexually abusing a girl in the early 1980s and had been convicted in 2004 for molesting two girls in 1974. He did not appear at Tuesday's hearing.

Trucking company faces dangerous goods charges

The owner of an Alberta-based trucking company facing 15 charges under the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act was in court Tuesday.

Alan Scraba, owner of A.R.S. Trucking and Welding Ltd., appeared without a lawyer to deal with the charges. The company is accused of transporting diesel fuel in improper fuel containers.

"I think it would be an excellent idea for you to obtain legal counsel. You don't have to," said Judge Robert Gorin. "It may be penny wise, but pound foolish."

Crown prosecutor John Noseworthy said the Crown would be proceeding by summary conviction on all counts, which entails lesser punishment if there is a conviction.

"He has been charged under federal legislation," said Noseworthy.

The case was adjourned to May 5 for the company to make its plea.

Men charged in airport cocaine bust choose trial by judge alone

The two men charged in connection with the RCMP drug bust at the Yellowknife Airport appeared in Territorial Court on Tuesday.

Brad Baker, 36, and Robert Howie, 58, both elected for a trial in Supreme Court with a judge alone, as opposed to a judge and jury.

Both men will have a preliminary inquiry, scheduled for Aug. 13.

"There are a number of witnesses," said Crown prosecutor Sandy Aitken.

The two face charges of two counts of trafficking each. Howie is also charged with one count of possession of property obtained by a crime.
